I'm not familiar with the product you describe, but all of them seem to be just "proprietary blends" of commonly available dietary supplements. Of course, you pay a jacked-up price for the "proprietary blend." Korean Red Ginseng elevates testosterone and therefore increases sex drive. Yohimbe helps with erectile dysfunction. These are the only two that have been systematically tested in controlled studies, that I'm aware of. The ginseng has to be taken for at least a week to begin having a noticeable effect on sexual drive. It's not going to be an earth-shattering difference. It does work, however.

However, probably greater than the biological effect is what you believe about the effects of the product. About 30% of people respond to placebo, an inert material which people believe will have a given beneficial effect. The identical medication has been found to work better when people are told it is more expensive. That is almost certainly the benefit to the "proprietary blends."

Since the supplements you describe don't claim to diagnose, treat, or prevent any disorder, they aren't regulated by the FDA. Therefore, caveat emptor-"Let the buyer beware."

ahh so while some of it holds scientific merit, some might just be hype and placebo effects. Well I try to keep everything without bias so I'll let you know how well this works out for me. I'm a bit skeptical about it working, but if it does work then huzzah!

I discovered the increase in sexual desire associated with ginseng accidentally, while taking ginseng to facilitate recovery from running. It does work. I looked at some clinical studies after my experience, and found out I'm not the only one who had that experience. It's very safe and not very expensive, so there's no reason not to try it.

Well I just got coffee in the mail today and HOLY SHIT it worked haha. OK, Rob, you're good. You had me going until you added the product link to your signature on later posts.

Before everyone jumps on this bandwagon, the active ingredients are commonly available herbal products. The term "proprietary blend" makes it sound like they have done something special with the ingredients. Actually, it just means they have just taken specific proportions and I doubt they can provide clinical studies that their formulation works any better than just taking the three herbs. FYI, horny goat week has been associated with problematic increases in heartbeat. It has been found to help with ED. Goji berry is a traditional chinese medicine and is associated with general increased well-being and energy.

So, the product probably works, but probably not any better than simply taking the recommended dosages of the three herbs independently. Users should know that there is some risk associated with Horny Goat Weed. It's efficacy has only been demonstrated for ED and their aren't any controlled studies that I'm aware showing that it increases sexual desire.

I'm just posting it in my sig to help out my friend now :) If it's against the forum rules I can take it out. I'm not too sure on the studies done on the goat weed, but all I know is it worked for us without any side effects. We made a deal where he would give me a 2-pack/month to help him advertise a bit. He told me that he hasn't heard of any problems with anyone that's taken the product, but if I hear anything about that then in all good faith I can't help him advertise it. Where can I go to find out if they've done clinical studies of this?

Rob: It kind of sounds like you got suckered into this one. There's absolutely no problem with saying "I tried this product and it worked well for me" and even providing a link to the product. However, since you are taking compensation, in the form of free product, this becomes advertisement. The screen signature even contains pricing information and a call to action, so this is definitely advertising and is inappropriate.

It sounds like you didn't know what was going on, but you can bet your friend did. That's why he had you do it instead of doing it himself. The appropriate way to advertise is to contact Dan and Jennifer and pay for advertising space.

You can access abstracts of medical journals at PubMed Home at no charge. For most people, the abstract is all you need.

FYI, dietary supplements are basically a no-man's land. They are unregulated and I can basically make any claim I want to as long as I don't say they treat, prevent, or diagnose a disease. Then they fall under the regulation of the FDA. However, I can combine wheat germ, oats, and rye, call it a proprietary blend, and sell it as a "colon tonic" even though you could buy the same thing at Kroger. The product probably does work, but you can bet that they haven't done clinical studies to find out the risks.

Thank you. Talking about your experience with a product is entirely appropriate, as long as you aren't receiving compensation. As far as I'm concerned, the issue is resolved. I hope you enjoy the forums. You seem to have good insight into the situations.
