Yes, you are waiting too long. If you ever think you like a girl and want to ask her out, it will always be easier to do it right away. The longer you wait and the more time you think about it, the harder it will become. Better late then never though.

You can get by on just personality alone but you have to comfortable with yourself and your body. If it doesn't bother you and you show that, then it won't bother anyone else. It doesn't hurt though to get into shape anyways, which will help to enhance your personality indirectly.

Yes, if you get the chance, definitely sit next to her. Having the opportunity to have her direct attention on a trip like that is huge. And there are all kinds of opportunities to flirt and have fun with her. Take advantage of it if you can.
