Way too tight? First time sex was painful for her...

My girlfriend and I decided to have sex for the first time. Both of use are virgins so it was a little awkward at first but things got better. Then when I put my penis in her the trouble started. It was so tight when I got it in and she said it really really hurt. I got it fully in for a few seconds but she said it really hurt. My penis is around 7 inches and 5 inches in width. We didn't go through with it in the end because it hurt too much for her.
My questions are why does it hurt so much? and my main worry is that how will we actually do it if it hurts to much to go through with it? I mean just sticking it in was too much so how are we supposed to continue and actually be able to have sex? My girlfriend is built very slender and a bit on the short side and I'm pretty tall. Am I too big for us to ever have sex? Is my penis too big?
Help would really be appreciated.

Use lots of lubricant and go slow and gently

Hi Zez112,

First, congratulations, that's such an exciting time. Don't worry, it's almost guaranteed to be weird and awkward the first time. :)

There are lots of reasons it could hurt. On one hand she could be very tight; you could be on the large side; the penis and vagina shapes (yes, they come in different shapes, not just sizes) aren't always a match. Oh, and it was the first time!

To make it better: Use plenty of lubricant (yes, really - don't gloss over this step) and go very, very slow and gently. For lubricant, KY isn't the best but it's easy to find at any drug store, better than nothing. And be sure you're using a condom, every time.

You can also use your fingers to stimulate her and penetrate her, it's not all about the penis. A question we get So often is is "how can I make my penis bigger?", when what truly matters is
1. a "fit" in size and shape between the penis in and the vagina
2. a desire on both your parts to please one another even if the mechanical components don't fit quite ideally...
